At Great Falls, the Potomac River flows over a rocky cataract that drops about 60 feet to a narrow called Stephen Mather Gorge. Along the gorge six locks were built to carry the canal over abruptly changing terrain. An Overlook provides a spectacular view of the falls. Great Falls Tavern, the picturesque building along side the lock, has had a long and serviceable life. Built in 1828 as the lockkeeper's house, the structure was enlarged to become a hotel and tavern by 1831. During the 1850's, the building was called the Crommelin House in honor of the Dutchman who obtained needed loans from Holland for the canal company. The white sandstone structure, complete with gables, chimneys, and distinctive green shutters, now serves as a canal museum and visitor center. Together, the tavern, lock, and canal boat compose a tranquil and photogenic scene during any season. |
